🌱 How to Grow Basil Genovese in South Africa:

Planting Time:
Sow in spring to early summer (August to December) when the risk of frost has passed. In frost-free areas, basil can be grown almost year-round.

Location:
It prefers a sunny position with 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It is great for garden beds, pots, or windowsills.

Soil Preparation:
Use well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).

Sowing Instructions:

  • Sow seeds 3–5 mm deep directly into the soil or in seed trays.

  • Space seedlings 20–30 cm apart.

  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during germination (7–14 days).

Watering & Care:

  • Water consistently, especially during dry spells.

  • Pinch off the top growth regularly to encourage bushiness and prevent early flowering.

  • Harvest leaves as needed once the plant reaches 15–20 cm in height.

Companion Plants:
Tomatoes, peppers, and oregano.

Pests & Tips:
Watch out for aphids and snails. Planting marigolds nearby can help deter pests naturally.
