Growing Guide (South Africa):
-
When to Sow: Start indoors in late July–August using seed trays or small pots; then transplant seedlings outdoors in late August–September once frost risk is past.
-
Climate & Location: Full sun, sheltered from cold and wind. Ideal soil temperature 18–35 °C.
-
Soil & Prep: Rich, well-drained loamy soil supplemented with compost and perlite (about 1/3) for good aeration .
-
Spacing & Care: Plant seedlings ~40–50 cm apart. Use drip irrigation or weekly watering (30–40 mm/week) to maintain moist but not waterlogged soil.
-
Fertilising: Apply balanced pre-plant fertilizer (2:3:4 mix) and side-dress with nitrogen-rich feed after flower set; switch to high P/K during fruiting.
-
Harvest Time: Chilies can be harvested green after 9–11 weeks, or left to ripen for increased heat and colour.
-
Tips: Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Begin seeds in a heated propagator or use a heat pad for even germination . Pinch or top plants to encourage branching and more fruit.
